The pressure to change the date of Australia Day is growing year after year. Here are 5 ways you can help make the change happen faster.
There is no denying that the pressure to move the date of Australia Day is growing stronger and stronger with every passing year. Depending on who you talk to, some believe that change is still a long way away but there are many of us that are optimistic that change could be just around the corner.
Already we have seen moves by local councils to move the date as a sign of respect towards Indigenous people in Australia. Triple J has also shifted the date of the Hottest 100 away from January 26 too. Even the data collected by google shows that the term Invasion Day has grown exponentially over the last three years.
Below are our top 5 ways you can help change the date of Australia Day.
5. Start learning about Australia’s true history.
There is so much information out there. Learning about history has never been easier. Jump on Youtube, Google or even Facebook. Some terms you might want to search would include massacres, slavery, Aboriginal poisonings… the list is endless.
4. Start sharing your knowledge.
Now that you know some really cold hard facts, share it with your friends and family. Sure you may find some aggression from certain people but remember they can’t win an argument against the truth. Stay calm and remain persistent. Our people have persisted the last 230 years of occupation with wave after wave of attacks against us. We are still here and we’re not going anywhere. Stand with us when it comes to showing respect towards changing the current date of Australia Day. I can guarantee you, we won’t be losing this fight.
3. Get connected on social media.
There are a few key social media networks which will be front and centre of upcoming Invasion Day rallies. Be sure to follow Blackfulla Revolution, Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance – WAR and Indigenous X to keep up to date with news, events and details of Invasion Day rallies which will be held in almost all major cities across Australia.
2. Get yourself a protest shirt.
Head over to the Grand Theft Australia page and purchase an Aboriginal resistance shirt. The deadly thing about purchasing from this page is that you will be helping fund the resistance effort against the proposed Adani mega mine. The shirts are being sold by the Wangan & Jagalingou mob.
1. Get down to a protest rally
As long as people are still trying to celebrate Australia Day on Invasion Day, we will be marching in the streets to tell them how wrong they are. Don’t be shame if you’re not Indigenous. Get down and know that you’re standing on the side of truth. There WILL be a day when change comes. Don’t you want to look back on these days with pride knowing that you were part of that change?
Don’t forget to share this with all your mob too.
