Music streaming company Spotify has launched a community driven online first by creating our very own “Black Australia” playlist which is accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
The main contributor to the playlist is Emily Nicol who is an Indigenous radio presenter herself who said it was an honour for her to be a part of this project that will continue to be updated in the weeks and months ahead.
The playlist features both long time established artists such as Jimmy Little, Archie Roach & Christine Anu as well as emerging artists like Pirra, Ziggy Ramo & Electric Fields too. Spotify is a great way to discover new artists and this playlist does exactly that for the talented artists who are featured. In total there are 50 tracks and we are really feeling the love to see our community being included in such a popular global platform.
If you haven’t done so already, be sure to check out the playlist and let us know in the comments which tracks you have on repeat. We keep going back to East Journey’s Ngarrpiya and we have saved their entire album for offline listening as well. We will be staying tuned for the next updates to the playlist in the future as well.
Welcome to Country would like to give a huge thanks to Spotify for supporting this initiative. Not only have they allowed the project to come to life, Spotify generously granted the Black Australia playlist free advertising and promotion to help launch the playlist during NAIDOC week 2017.
